Thoroughbred races usually go one of two ways: an early front-runner sets a blistering pace out of the gate and leaves the field in the dust, or a strong closer lingers in the middle of the pack until he makes his move at the end of the race. Now that the Real Estate Portfolio Stock Challenge is in the home stretch, what type of finish can we expect?
There have already been several different leaders through the first three quarters of the year, so nobody will be going wire to wire. The current leader, through Sept. 30, is Jeff Donnelly of Wachovia Securities.
The industry experts were asked to predict the 2003 year-end index value of the NAREIT Equity REIT Index and the Morgan Stanley REIT Index and select a portfolio of five individual real estate stocks tracked using equity market cap weighted calculations, which is the same methodology used in calculating the NAREIT Equity Index.
After getting out of the gate slowly, the Challenge has turned into a fast track as all seven participants have posted total returns greater than 20 percent.
